Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

It’s been a long time since a book has brought me to tears. Genuine alligator, ugly red-face tears. Code Name Verity is a beautiful story of an unlikely friendship that unfolds on recipe cards, prescription drug tablets, pilot’s logs and any other scrap of paper that could be found. Elizabeth Wein shows she is a masterful story teller, seamlessly jumping between the stories of the best friends caught on the wrong side. She gives Every Last Detail and just like the war itself, they are all heartbreaking. I recommend this book to everyone.

The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

I thought I was over vampires! Granted, I do still read several series where vampires are central characters (I recently finished the 12th Sookie Stackhouse book and did NOT enjoy it.) Julie Kagawa’s vampires are familiar in legend, but she adds so many new elements you don’t even notice. The post-apocalyptic aspects to the story had the feel of The Passage or The Road for teens. Allie is a strong female character that tries to hang on to her humanity in the face of a world that thinks she’s a monster. The romance is sweet and not over the top. I’ll definitely read the second installment! (4/5)
